CPYC Membership Development...Flying Along! - Posted on Monday, March 08, 2010

Governors John Cooke, Jay Lurie and many other Members are hard at work promoting the Club. To see CPYC's March 2010 Windcheck Magazine Advertisement,  Click Here.

Membership Development and Marketing efforts are paying off as Charlie Kreitler, Governor in Charge of Membership reports that the February Membership Committee Meetings had the largest number of candidates anyone can ever remember.  In fact, the candidates and their sponsors outnumbered the Membership Committee, a very refreshing turn of events.

CPYC is capitalizing on its sailboat racing roots during these interesting times. Good times for the Club and its Members.

CPYC Members - Joy of Sailing - Posted on Friday, March 05, 2010

Editors note: This article is part of an ongoing series about CPYC member racing. Phil and Wendy Lotz have been members since the early 80s, beginning their initital club racing experience in Lightnings. Their children learned to sail in the junior program and the family was very active on Bluff Point through the mid 90s. Phil was a founding member of the V15 class, bringing it to CPYC while serving as Governor and later becoming an officer of the Club. Wendy has been an advisor and sailing coach for the New Canaan High School. A couple of years ago, the Lotz's launched their sailing into the major leagues with the purchase of a NYYC Swan 42. Their story is interesting and their  love of our sport apparent. The family's contribution to CPYC's rich past has helped shaped what the Club is today. Enjoy the read….

News Flash...The Lotz family are now competing in the 2010 Miami Grand Prix Regatta on their Melges 32 as this hits cyberspace, Click here.

CPYC Members - The Joy of Sailing - Posted on Friday, February 19, 2010

Editors note: This article is part of an ongoing series about CPYC members racing. The project was conceived as a way to connect within our community and recognize active member sailors by sharing their stories, schedules, results and sailing passion. This feature from Josh Goldman highlights the Lightning Winter Circuit.  Enjoy the read....

Lightning Southern Circuit Preview - As winter snow storms ravage the Northeast, thoughts of warmer weather and sailing are not far behind. Lightning Team High Cheese, skippered by CPYC member Josh Goldman with crew Mandi Markee form San Diego and Nick Farina, a former Lightning boat grant recipient from Boulder, are ready to go South. Other CPYC members may be on hand for the fun.

The annual Lightning Southern Circuit is just a month away, starting with the  2010 Deep South Regatta (3/13, 3/14) at the Savannah Yacht Club, followed by a travel day to Miami.  A two day mid-week regatta, 2010 Lightning Midwinter Championship, on Biscayne Bay hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club (3/16, 3/17) and then a jaunt across alligator ally to St. Petersburg Yacht Club for the the finale, 2010 Winter Championship (3/19, 3/20 & 3/21), a Friday, Sat, Sunday event which is usually has conditions similar to Long Island Sound (with a more subtle current).  Typically 30-35 boats will sail the entire circuit with a larger turnout at St Pete (55-65 boats).  There is an overall winner at the end and the scoring is usually very close.  Ched Proctor is a former winner.

The regatta for Team High Cheese is a logistical challenge.  The boat gets driven to Georgia by another competitor. The crew flys in from Denver and San Deigo and somehow we all go sailing on Saturday March 13th....It is a fun ten days that requires a lot of planning, driving, rigging and patience.  We all can't wait!

News Flash About 2010 CPYC Junior Sailing Program Registration - Posted on Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Charter Optis and Pixels are now fully subscribed and a waiting list has been started; charter spots still available for 420.  For first time ever we now have 2 charter Lasers available.  If your family's summer plans include a CPYC boat charter for our Junior Program, please sign up soon as the boats are going rapidly.  Plenty of room still left in all Junior classes for private boats, but we did fill up all Opti classes by March last year, so please don't be shut out by waiting too long.

In the next few days, we will shift to our new 100% online registration system. Until then, all the details relating to the Junior Sailing program, registration, the Application and Charter documents are still posted on the Junior page, click here.

Due to the changeover to online registration, we are not mailing Applications to returning families this year, so please do not wait for one to arrive, as we don't want you to risk being closed out.

CPYC Members - The Joy of Sailing - Posted on Monday, February 08, 2010

Editors note: This is the first of a series about CPYC members racing. The project was conceived as a way to connect within our community and recognize active member sailors by sharing their stories, schedules, results and sailing passion. As the research developed, it became crystal clear how much effort and commitment our members devote to their passion of choice. Some members race occasionally at CPYC, but more frequently in National, Regional and Local Regattas in their One Design Class. These active sailboat racing members also help others and serve in important roles necessary to administering the Club. Other members race mostly at CPYC and only occasionally, if at all, outside the Club. Without regard to racing preferences, love of our sport and contribution to the Club as volunteers is what makes CPYC a special place for all of us.  Enjoy the read....

Revelation is a J105 Family Race Boat, co-owned and co-skippered by George and Alex Wilbanks with Ann also as crew. When father and son stop fighting, we are quite fast. We drink beer only when the racing is done for the day and listen to loud music when not actually racing. Bill Walker says he will bring earplugs next time he races with us cause the music drove him nuts. Our crew is made up almost exclusively of CPYC friends.  Marcello Marvelli, Bill Pierz, Sarah  Hamm, Jamie Ewing and Dave Marseli are frequently on board. We've also had Storm Snaith, Peter Boehm, Dave Howe, Sean Joyce and Serge Karpow. Last year we had 13 different CPYC sailors as crew representing every fleet (except the Stars, for no particular reason!)....

....One day Ann may be the force that brings a fleet of trailerable J105s into the CPYC family. She continues with exceptional levels of energy in other areas of club life including Junior Sailing and responsibilities as Rear Commodore. Her passion to achieve the most from what she manages is apparent in everything she does.

Member Update - Sewer Installation Project in Full Swing - Posted on Thursday, January 28, 2010

As anticipated, the "Big Dig" - Bluff Point Style began and was completed in a single day. The main sewer line that will service the club was installed on Bluff Point Road on Wednesday January 27, 2010. The trenching has been largely completed on Bluff Point Road and out Cross Way from Bluff Point Road as far as Sea Spray.   Temporary asphalt resurfacing of the fine gravel cover of the roadway will not occur until the spring and repaving to the original condition will take place after the completion of the entire project.

The next step in the sewer installation process, is for streetside connections to be installed to the main sewer line. The Big Dig will now continue on to the other roads on Saugatuck Island with minimal and temporary inconveniece anticipated.

Based on the progress made on Bluff Point Road in a single day, disruption from this project is expected to be minimal.

Stay tuned for more details as we learn more about the plan to install the connecting sewer line from the street to the main Clubhouse.  Also, the Board of Governors has begun to discuss whether addition of bathroom facilities to, or in the area of. the Maintenance Shed/Junior Loft "fits" as a priority for capital projects for 2010 or 2011.

US Sailing's new President, Gary Jobson, reaches out. - Posted on Friday, January 15, 2010

The YRALIS sponsored two evenings at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and Stamford Yacht Club. The venue had good company, light food and and a listen to Gary Jobson's vision of how he would like to improve US Sailing, the sports governing body in the US. He is a believer in collective wisdom and was seeking input from yacht club leaders on how to strengthen the partnership with yacht clubs, regional sailing associations and the sailing community at large. His final comment at the end of an enjoyable slide presentation was "Keep it fun!"

When it is cold outside...THINK SAFETY! - Posted on Thursday, January 07, 2010

Have you practiced a Man Over Board (MOB) with your crew? This applies to dingys as well as larger sailboats. Never let the boat get far away from the MOB. If possible 100 feet or less. Picture a coconut floating in 2 foot seas for a perspective. STAY CLOSE. Take a bearing on the MOB. Can the crew recover the MOB skipper? How do you get a waterlogged 200 pounder back in the boat? Does your crew know how to start the engine, use a radio, report a position and attract attention? What about hypothermia and common blows to the head? Does anyone aboard know how to treat medical emergencies?

  • Click here, for a good MOB video.
  • Click here, for a good discussion of MOB procedures.
  • Click here, for CPYC Safety Procedures (see pages 17 and 18).

REVIEW, PRACTICE and DISCUSSION, can save a life!
